THE "AUSTRIAN" ELEMENT.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —In last night's issue a letter appeared signed by '"A Supporter of the British Empire.'' With your kind permission I would like to point out that the writer is erring sadly, when he calls the contractors "Austrians." If he were to look at a map of Austria he will find '•Croatia, Dalmatia, Herzegovina, and Bosnia" right at the foot of it. The said countries were independent states, and it is .not their fault if they were subduW by Austria; just the same as Austria is trying to subdue Servia, over which country the present war commenced. The same Croatians, Dalmatians, etc., do not even recognise the Austrian language, but speak the Slavonic, language, which is* the. old Russian language. At the outbreak of the war the Croations, Dalmatians; etc., had a demonstration in the city of Auckland in front of the Austrian Embassy and attempted to burn the Austrian flag. Does not that show that their sympathies are with the Allies? Also, the. papers have already shown, how generously the same Croatians, etc., have .given towards the Patriotic Fund.—L am, etc., A. T. COATES.
