"NOT A BRITISH COUNCIL."

(To the Editor)

Sir, —The Whangarei Borough Council cannot be said to support British contractors or workman, judging by their action in accepting tenders from Austrians for the new water supply and drainage works for the local hospital. The majority of the Borough Council should be aware that the Austrian Nation is engaged with Germany fighting hand in hand against the British Empire and her Allied friends in the world's greatest war. Whangarei district, much to her credit, has sent forth her sons to the front to uphold the British flag and liberty. Whangarei residents have freely subscribed to the patriotic funds and to the distressed Belgians, yet our city fathers in their wisdom have seen fit to assist in replenishing the Treasury of a number of the members of a nation who is opposed to British freedom by letting contracts to them, which in right belongs to the residents of Whangarei or at any rate to British-born subjects. Both . the Mayoral and Borough Council elections are not far distant when electors will have an opportunity of returning a true British Council. —I am etc., A SUPPORTER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE. [We do not know the nationality of the contractors referred to in the above letter, but we think it only fair to repeat that a big majority of so-called Austrians in New Zealand are not Austrians at all. —Ed.]
