A STREET MELEE.
BRIGHT SPECIMENS OF SOLDIERS
WELLINGTON, January 21
Five members of the territorial forces and throe constables participated in a melee in the street yesternight. Four of the soldiers were charged to-day, three with obstructing a constable, one with resisting*, and another with inciting to resist anl ; with assaulting a constable.. The ! constable stated in evidence that ho received a complaint that two men, had heen insulting women, and visited the locality. He found the men sitting on the kerbing; On speaking to them one man attacked witness with a bayonet, but it was taken from him and he was handcu'fted. While be?ng escorted to the police station two others interfered. The constable was struck on the head and the man got away. Two more constables came on the scene and four of the accused were arrested. All were convicted and handed to the military authorities dealt with. Each was ordered to pay 3s 4d damages to handcuffs and a shako.
