(Own Correspondent.)
The county elections passed off very quietly, most .of the ratepayers voting, although it is said that one or two forgot about it altogether. The defeat of Mr Mackenzie was . not. altogether unexpected . We must trust that in future all money will be spent where most, urgently "ceded, and for a start it would be well for Mr Hay to have about 60 chains of metalling done at the Opuawhanga end of the Otonga-Opuawhanga Road.' Money was previously,-granted for this work, but by a clerical error was sent to the Opuawhanga-Whananak' Road, and was thus lost to the worst piece of road in the riding, if not in the county. Mr G. Wilkinson addressed the -lectors on Tuesday night. He received an attentive hearing from a good muster of settlers. His address was much on the lines of his Hikurangi speech. At the close of his addiess several questions were asked and answered in a satisfactory manner. A vote of thanks and confidence in Mr Wilkinson was proposed and carried unanimously. A fir e has been burning in Mr J. Bisset's bush in Kaikanui for some days. So far it has been confined to a small area, but with the dry weather it may get out of hand at any •ime and sweep the country.
