At dawn m Monday r ;n':.Vh airmen reconnoitred the German jjositions on tl c coast. The artillery was cleverly concealed and partly burieii in the slopr:; of dunes, with tire muzzles pointing seawards.
The Alii >s opened an attack on the Germans at Nieuport in conjunction \Vi;,h a Franco-British squadron of three small cruisers and a number <.f destroyers and torpedoers. The Germans maintained an un-itcrmptod fi.ro. attacking infantry and warships. The latter silenced two batteries at Westende and finally withdrew after a destroyer 1 ad been seriously damaged.
