WHOLE CITY IN RUINS
PARIS, Sept. 21
The Rheims Cathedral has been razed to the ground. The Government is protesting to the Poavci-s about German vandalism. Colleges and public buildings have also been destroyed, and the city is a. heap of ruins.
The Rheims Cathedral (1212-1430), although the. towers oi' the original design Avere still unfinished Avas one of the finest extant specimens of Gothic architecture, its nave was 466 i'eet long by 99 in breadth, Avith a transept of 160 feet, and the height Avas 144 feet. Its grandest features Avere lh<- Aye:-;! facade. Avhich Avas almost unrivalled, with its magnificent .doonvay, and the so-called Angel Tower, which rose 50 feet above the lofty roof.
