RAILWAY FREIGHTS.

Telegraph.—Press Association

DUNEDIN, May 6

A deputation from the Otago Harbour Board waited on Mr Herries (Minister for Railways) at Port Chalmers yesterday, and asked a reduction in freights on the DunedinPort Chalmers line and for the widening of the George Street pier so that the board might proceed with deepening a berth to make it capable of accommodating vessels drawing 30 feet.

Mr Herries, in reply, said the whole question hinged on what the policy of the board was going to be. Were they going to make the main harbour at Dunediri or at Port Chalmers? The Department was prepared to meet them if it knew exactly what the policy of the board was. Before it got that information he did not think the Department could commit itself to an expenditure which might later on prove useless.
