FIRE ON TOKOMARU.
COAL BUNKER ABLAZE
Telegraph.—Press Association
GISBORNE, May 1,
The coal bunker of the Shaw, Saville cargo steamer Tokomaru on the port side is reported to be on fire. The outbreak is not considered serious, but loading operations have v been suspended till the afternoon, owing to the fumes coming through the hold. The Tokomaru at noon to-day signalled to send immediate assistance. The dredge John Townley, equipped with powerful pumps, has gone out with members of the Gisborne fire brigade.
The Tokomaru was expected to arrive at Whangarei Heads to-morrow morning to load frozen meat, but yesterday Mr James McKinnon, secretary of the Harbour Board, received advice from Napier that, owing to delays in port in bad weather the vessel would not arrive before Sunday morning. The Tokomaru >is one of the best known of the Shaw,'Savill fleet. Her tonnage specifications are 4072 nett and 10,000 gross.
