HOSPITAL BENEFIT.

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION

So great was the-attendance at, the Queen's Theatre last night on the occasion of the picture benefit to 'raise funds to furnish the children's ward at the Whangarei Hospital, that several hundreds of people were unable to gain admission to the building. The procession, prior to the entertainment, was a huge success, and crowds of people lined route. The Whangarei Band led the way, and then came the Boy Scouts, united ( Friendly Societies, and the " Suffragettes "—the Whangarei Fire Brigade representatives. As the procession passed the Town Hall the meeting of the Borough Council adjourned, and the councillors, standing ( on the balcony, applauded the workers for charity. A liberal display of fireworks was made at intervals, and the scene was a most spectacular one. The procession marched the Length of Cameron Street, and then returned to the Queen's Theatre.

The picture programme was an excellent one,and .at the interval Mr 'A. C. Bevington, as representing the united friendly societies,, tendered thanks to th Queen's Theatre management, Mr P. Williams' orchestra, the ' Municipal Band, the Suffragettes (Fire Brigade) and the general public. The speaker was in a position to announce that the estimate of takings from all sources connected with the demonstration was £120, which with the Government subsidy added would make available for the children's ward a sum of £264.
