LONDON, Oct. 7

j At the inquest on the escaped prisoner Jones who was reported to [have been shot in the leg the previloiis day by a boy to whom he refused to surrender, and died a few minutes afterwards, Bateman, an undergraduate at Oxford, gave evidence that he fired out of fear, believing Jones had a revolver. As he was incapable of giving aid he left the wounded man until his (Bateman's) father came and found Jones dead. A verdict of manslaughter against Bateman was returned.
