CREATOR OF THE WORLD.

University is rejoicing in the possession of a tablet dug up in Nippur some years ago which has now been translated by Dr. Arno Poebel, who believes that he has unveiled the oldest story so far known of the creation of the world. The University tablet dates back to the reign of Hammurabi, about 7000 B.C. The record reads like a new version of Genesis, with the important difference that the Creator of the World is described as a Goddess and not a God. Dr. Poebel, who is now engaged in checking this translation, says the tablet depicts a goddess quite clearly, and speaks of two male gods as relatively unimportant. The University authorities agree with Dr. Poebel that the talblet now deciphered gives pro--1 bably the first story of the world's creation, and also the most wonderful accounts of civilisation in 2100 B.C.
