AUTHOR AND HIS BET.

LONDON, Oct. 1

The fund for training British athletes for the Olympic Games now totals £8050.

In a letter to the "Times" of August 26, Mr Frederic Harrison, the well-known writer, said the raising of money for this purpose stank of gate-money and professional pothunting.

The Duke of Westminster, -replying to Mr Harrison, declared that Britain's losses in sports made a tale* of national disaster, and offered to make a bet of a guinea that Mr Harrison would subscribe to the fund before it closed.

Mr Harrison has now forwarded a guinea to the Duke, saying "You win your bet."
