THE EPIDEMIC.

TWO FRESH CASES AT KAIKOHE.

WELLINGTON, Sept. 4

No fresh cases of smallpox are reported from Auckland, but two more have been notified at Kaikohe.

In consequence of a report ceived Dr East paid a visit to Akerarna and found four cases of the disease among Maoris, but in each instance the patients were recovering. The Maoris strongly resented the action of the person who reported the cases in ignorance, they were trying to hide the outbreak. Dγ East pointed out to them that by doing so they were liable to a fine of £50. This phase of the question immediately had the desired effect. Dr East reports that the disease is now dying out very quickly throughout the whole of the district. Mr G. H. Woods, secretary of the Whangarei Maori Council, states that the epidemic is dying out in the Whangarei County, but he has evidence that the disease is travelling north. Wherever the Council has found the natives short of provisions, the Hospital Board has been notified, and is supplying the necessary food. There have only been four such cases in the __ county.
