THE ROYD GARLICK ENQUIRY.

A PHYSICAL CULTURIST GIVES EVIDENCE. WELLINGTON, Aug. 27. The Royd Garlick Committee resumed this afternoon.

Mr T. M. Wilford called Frederick Arthur Hornabrook, physical culturalist, of Christchurch, who said he had got a diploma as a masseur in the same way as Mr Garlick, without examination. He thought no one but a qualified physical instructor should have been appointed director of the New Zealand system. Neither Mr Garlick nor himself had those qualifications. The first essential to building up a State system of physical training was to have a highly-train-ed, highly-educated man at its head. We had nothing to learn from Australia in the matter of physical training. Witness was not a disappointed man, not considering himself qualified for the position of director, though his qualifications were as good as those of Mr Garlick. It was absurd to send Mr Garlick to Australia to get instruction. There was not a University there capable of giving him the requisite training. Witness taught Mr Garlick in 1902. He knew nothing of Mr Garlick's qualifications as an organiser.

, To the Hon. A. U Herdman: Witness thought the manual prepared for use in schools was excellent. The American system of physical training was in advance of the English system, because the men at its head had been through a University course. To the Hon. J. A. Millar: No man with, less qualification than an American University graduate should have been appointed director of the New Zealand system Mr Wilford has closed his case. The, Committee will proceed to the hearing of Mr Laurenson's charges to-day.
