DR. EAST EXPRESSES ALARM

Dr. East visited Whananaki yesterday where lie had previously attended forty patients suffering with what he regarded as smallpox. He was greatly shocked to find that.nearly half the sufferers had disappeared from the settlement. He made inquiries and was told that they had cleared across' towards Wairahi, on the Opuawhanga side of the river.

He v"ews the circumstances with alarm as the people are still infectious, and they had received definite instructions from him that, under $iq consideration, were they to leave the settlement. He also doubts very seriously that they have confined themselves to the Whananaki and Wairahi «eJttlement|s, ; and tihinks lit probable they have scattered all over the district.

The patients who have remained at Whananaki are progressing favourably. No fresh cases have been reported from the locality.
