A REPORT FROM NUKUTAWHITI.
Most conflicting reports are continually being made in .regard to the virulence or otherwise of the prevailing epidemic in the northern districts. For instance, the health authorities here have been informed by their inspector (Mr. Shenton) who was in the Tangiteroria district, that he had " heard " of fourteen deaths recently at Nukutawhiti. As this seemed a serious business, Dr. Frazer Hurst, medical superintendent of the hospital, has to-day ridden out to the locality to make inquiries first hand. It has also been stated that some of the deaths are the result of tohungaism, which it is alleged is being largely practised in the district. In order to discover the truth of the matter an " Advocate " representative communicated with Mr. G. Dysart, postmaster of Nukutawhiti, by telephone this morning, and was informed that the disease has practically died out in the district. He only knew of one death from the epidemic, but there had been five or six other deaths among the natives from other complaints. No fresh cases had been reported for a fortnight, and he had heard absolutely nothing of the practice of tohungaism in the district.
