LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS.
The Whangarei school will not reopen until Friday morning. The disinfection carried out to-day has been very thorough indeed, but Dr. Walker (temporary health officer), who visited the school this afternoon, considers that as so much formalin has been used it would be wise to allow of prolonged ventilation before admitting the children, who might otherwise find themselves suffering from severe headache. Dr. Walker informed the chairman of the committee of this to-day, and Mr Wilkinson decided to adopt the doctor's advice not to open the school to-morrow as had been intended. Classes will re-assemble at the usual hour on Friday.
A meeting of the Whangarei St. Andrew's .Society was held in McDougall's tea rooms last night. Mr A. M. McLeod presiding. Mr J. D. McKenzie read a paper gntitled "The Celt." Other items wer-te contributed by Mr R. M. Mackay (bagpipe selection), Misses Baird, Mitchell. McMillan, McDonald, and Mr Lawson (songs), Mr H. Grierson (recitation), and Mr A. M. The Executive Committee of the North Auckland Court telegraphed to the northern members of Parliament with reference to the action of the Auditor-General in tagging the balance-sheet of the Borough Council with respect to payments to the committee. Each member has replied that he interviewed the Prime Minister, who stated that if power to make such payments did not already exist he would immediately bring down a bill to legalise the grants.
The Borough Council caused the streets to be swept early this morning, with the result that large quantities of thin mud were swept to the sides of the streets. This was then raked into heaps, but up to nearly midday no action had been taken to have the sweepings removed. Consequently pedestrians were splashed with mud whenever a horse travelled near the footpath. Three instances -if this were witnessed at the crossing at Vine Street. A lady had her costume bespattered with mud from shoulder to foot, and two men were treated with even less courtesy.
