CHICKEN-POX IN THE BOROUGH.
CHILD FOUND INFECTED.
A little girl, who was on a visit to some friends in Whangareii, was on Saturday found to be suffering from chicken-pox, and though some delay seems to have taken place in reporting the case to the Health authorities, the case was discovered officially yesterday and the house in Norfolk Street, where she had been living with other children, placed in quarantine with a view to isolating the occupants. The child is being removed to the country for isolation, and the other children are to be kept apart •from others pending observation of their condition at a later date.
In conversation with an "Advocate" reporter a resident of Titoki and a regular traveller through Parakao, Pakotai, Nukutawhiti and Mangakahia stated that the epidemic has practically (died out in those districts. Dr. East also informed a reporter that he had reason to believe that the cases in Whananaki are all progressing favourably, and that iti appeared as if the disease had run its course there.
Archdeacon Hawkins (superintendent of the Maori Missions, Auckland province) has been appointed inspector and public vaccinator by the Chief Health Officer. Archdeacon Hawkins will proceed North and assist the Health Department to stamp out the epidemic amongst the natives.
It is difficult to trace the troublesome consequences of the outbreak of the prevailing epidemic to their full extent. The settlement of native land will be hampered for one thing, as the Native Land Court has had to suspend all sittings in the Auckland province. The Court >is still doing its work in the eastern part of the North Island, but the greater portion of its useful operations in facilitating settlement is at a standstill.
WELLINGTON, Aug. 26
The official bulletin reports that two fresh cases occurred at Kaikohe on Saturday and five others have since been notified. One case is reported at Kaponga and one at Oruoru
