Weather Bureau forecast for 24 hours from 9 o'clock this morning:— Easterly winds, moderate to strong, freshening, and backing up by E. to S. The weather will probably prove cold and showery. The night will probably be very cold. Barometer rising. Tides and sea increasing to rough sea, swell on the coast, and tides good.

District orders state that Messrs R. W. Colbeck and D. A. Finlayson, of the 11th N.A. Mounted Riifles have passed their probation and are gazetted second lieutenants. Second Lieutenant J. H. Wyatt, of the 15th Regiment, has resigned his coTuniiission. Second Lieutenant E. H. Blundell has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant. The supplementary water supply which was connected writh the reservoir last summer will be disconnected from to-day, as sufficient water is now coming down the main stream to supply the town. Mr H. C. Grierson, architect for the Town Hall, arrived in Whangarei by \, the Kani-eri yesterday morning, and .inspected the building. He will rectify a few little defects, and will also see to lining the roof above the stage. v_An unkempt looking individual who had been living in a precarious way !in the Heads district for some months past and become more or Jess a nuisance, was to-day, on a charge of vagrancy, sentenced to three months' imprisonment by Messrs Briggs * and Hemphill, Justices. A special district order has been issued by Colonel Logan, commanding Auckland District, stating that Officers and N.C.O.'s charged with administering the Defence Act, must exercise the greatest tact and patience, and, while seeing that the provisions of the Defence Act are not evaded, must endeavour to avoid bringing into the Magistrate's Court ■any case that is not a deliberate, and intentional breach of the Defence Act. -

With a view to assisting the Choral Union in providing scenery for the comic opera "Doris" Mr De Tourret is giving a benefit programme at the Lyceum Theatre on Thursday evening. The height of the stage in the Town Hall makes it necessary to have new scenery builf, so the expenses in this direction will be 'heavy. Members of the society will contribute musical items; and an effort is being made to procure the services of a high-class monologue entertainer. The committee has decided to stage the opera on the Sth, 9th and 10th of October.

The action of the Auditor-General in challenging a payment of £12 10s by the Borough Council to the funds for installing a North. Auckland Court at the forthcoming exhibition has, of course, raised a question of some moment in respect to the larger sum of £140 authorised by resolution, but not yet paid over by the council. The opinion of the Auditor-General is clearly very different from that on which the council relied when coming to its recent decision. The Minister for Internal Affairs is now being communicated with in respect to the authority of local bodies under the Exhibitions Act of 1910, and if it is necessary a request will be made to have an amendment of the law made this session.

Brigadier Vince,. the Salvation Army Divisional Officer at Auckland, and Adjutant Thirkettle, his secretary, left for Auckland by the Manaia to-day after spending a few days in Whangarei. The occasion of their visit was the 21st anniversary of the Salvation Army Corps rln this district. Last night at the Salvation Army barracks a tea meeting was held, the hall being crowdted. The Methodist and Presbyterian Churches each provided a table, and the ministers of those demonstrations and the minister of the 9aptist Church were present. Items were contributed by the choirs of both Methodist and Presbyterian Church. Messages were received from' all past officers, and on Wednesday night there will be a children's celebration and tea

The marriage was solemnised by the Rev. J. L. Pattullo at Kamo morning of Miss Ella Finlayson, est daughter of Mr Angus Finlayson, of kamo, and Mr Arthur Oberlin Brown, son of Mr Oberlin Brown, o£ Alt. Eden, Auckland. The bride, wearing white muslin with the customary veil and bouquet, was attend-, ed by her sister, Miss Toss Finlays<*C| wearing blue silk voile, with ninon overdress. Mr Hugh C. son, of Auckland, was .best man. After the ceremony a large number of guests assembled at the house of the bride's parents. Mr and M s Brown, who left by the Manaia on their honeymoon, were the recipients of many presents. The bride's travelling dress was a navy blue costume, with black hat trimmed with white ostrich feathers.
