ONERAHI v. NGAPUHI
The match between Onerahi and Ngapuhi took place at the Mairtown Hockey ground on Saturday. The weather was fine in the opening stages of the game, but towards the end of the latter half the game was played out in pouring rain. The ground was very slippery, and in several places there were pools of water lying about. This was not conducive to good play, and the game was disappointing. Play was dull for the greater part of the time, but there were occasions when the players livened up and infused some degree of spirit into their play. The most lively parts of the game were when the ball got into the pools. Then ensued some smart scrambles for the ball in the water, much of which found its way on to the players. At half-time there was not a player, with the exception of the goal-keepers, perhaps, who was not wet through.
Onerahi had all the best of the game. They forced play most of the time, and in the second half the ball was hardly ever out of the Ngapuhi's half. Through their anxiety to score Onerahi threw away a number of chances. Had they taken advantage of these the score would undoubtedly have been bigger. Despite this Onerahi won by a substantial margin, scoring 6 to Ngapuhi's 3. Though rain spoiled good play in the second half Onerahi managed to increase their lead, and to gain a decisive victory. For the winners S. Going (2), R. Going 1), C. McGregor, N. Munro, and W. Mason (1 each), were the scorers, while Dixon was responsible for Xgapuhi's goal.
