Notice was given in the House* of Representatives on Thursday last by Mr E. H. Clark (Chalmers) to ask' the Prime Minister whether he is aware that the head of one of the departments of which he is the Minister in charge is drawing a salary of about £300 a year to manage an outside estate while drawin ga salary of £725 per year from the State. Mr Clark says that as the regulations of _}te Railway Department prohibit a railway man from selling milk, as he would thereby be competing against the milksuppliers, surely it is only equitable that what applies to lower-paid servants should apply to the higher-paid officials The question was greeted with loud "Hear, hears!" from the Opposition side of the House. A series of meetings in connection with the movement to introduce into the State schools of the Dominion the system of Bible reading and religious instruction which is in force in New South Wales, Western Australia, Tasmania and Queensland, will take place in Auckland and district during the first 18 days of September. Among the speakers will be the Rev. W. A. Keay, minister of Newton Congregational Church; the Rev. P. W. Clarkson, official lecturer of the League, and financial organiser; the Rev. Isaac Jolly, ex-Modera-tor; and the Rev. C. H. Garland. | A " bull " was perpetrated by the Woodville delegate at the Counties' Conference in Wellington last Thursday. "In our county," he said, "the wealthy residents live abroad." At this there was loud laughter. Further amusement was expressed when 'the delegate, addressing the chairman on the proposal that revenue from a motor tax should be given to hospital boards, said " You are a chairman, and you know how squander it."
