Large counties as against small were favoured by several speakers at the Counties' Conference at Wellington the other day. Mr. H. J. Middleton, chairman of the Southland County Council, stated.that the cost of administration of his county was only 7 per cent., which was lower than that of any other county, thus showing that it was best to have a large county. Mr. G. V. Pearce, of Patea, stated that he knew of some counties in ' Taranaki which were smaller than the old road board districts.
