"BANZAI."

An extraordinary incident took place recently at the Japanese naval station of Maizuru, on the sea of Japan. Some new harbour works had been completed, and, by way of creating interest in naval matters, the public were invited to the opening ceremony. Various evolutions were performed, but the - piece de resistance of the celebration appears to have been a demonstration of submarine minework. A model wooden warship, some 40ft in length, was moored in the middle ot the bay, and with remarkable celeriity the launches attached to the port laid a line and connected it with the station on shore. Whether by accident or design—and, in view of the official character of the proceedings, the former seems scarcely possible — the dummy vessel was decorated with the " Stars and Stripes." This touch of realism seemed to appeal to the spectators. At a given signal the mine was exploded, the " American " warship blown to pieces, and the harbour resounded with shouts of " Banzai! "
