A QUESTION OF DECENCY

JACK JOHNSON'S ENGAGEMENT. PROTEST BY VARIETY ARTISTS. MET BY MUSIC-HALL MANAGERS. (By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright) LONDON, Aug. 21. The executive committee of the Variety Artists' Federation has strongly protested against the tendency of music-halls to engage people of unsavoury notoriety from the law courts and elsewhere. The committee states that Jack Johnson's engagement is a question of decency, and it is deeply to be regretted that time did not allow of drastic action being taken. The music-halls employing Johnson have offered to cancel or postpone the contracts of artists who do not wish to appear on the same programme as Johnson.
