According to the London "Shipping Gazette," the price paid by the Union Steamship Company for the steamer Gifford (now the Waitomo), 7500 tons •deadweight capacity, built in 1911, was £57,000, equal to £7 12s per ton. Several other steamers well-known in New Zealand, were sold between April and June, namely, New Zealand Shipping Company's Wakanui, 9000 tons deadweight, built in 1889, price £35,----000; Corry liner Star of England, 5100 tons dead weight, built in ISS9. £12,----000: Clan Ogilvy, 4000 tons deadweight, built 1896, £16,000; Clan Ross Clan Mckay and Clan Campbell, each 2600 tons deadweight,-built 1594, £17,----000 each.
