RUATANGATA.

August IS

An old and respected veteran in the person of Mr. James McGraph possed away on Thursday, August The interment took place on tliep!r6th inst. at Kamo, when many settlers paid their last tribute of respect. The deceased was 76 years of age, and for some time past has been subject to indifferent health. Fortunately he spent his declining years in comfort, having resided for a considerable lengthy period with Mr. and Mrs. Hodge, ' who have extended every care and attention to the deceased. . PERSONAL. Mrs. W. A. Hutchings has recently returned from the Whangarei Hospital after undergoing an operation, and we are pleased to see her about once again. General sympathy is extended to Mrs. J. Thorburn, who has contracted rheumatic fever, and is at present in the hospital. Everyone hopes to hear of a speedy recovery from this painful affliction. SOCIAL NOTES. The social advertised for the 15 th inst proved a financial failure, attributable to some extent to the threatening weather conditions prevailing, and more so to the muchdreaded smallpox. Unfortunately, by all accounts there are three European cases in our adjacent district — Aponga, tnerefore it would be wise "• on the Entertainment Committee's part to withhold their usual monthly social for a while, otherwise the financia 1 position will have a downward tendency. Generally our youth and beauty show much reluctance to being pox-marked. No doubt members of the committee fully recognise that many beauties of the fair sex in this and surrounding districts patronise their socials, and therefore they would be extremely sorry to be responsible for infection. Ruatangata is free from any sign of the smallpox so far, and many have been vaccinated.

CREAM VAN. The cream van resumes running on the 19th inst. once a week for a while, and later the number of trips per week will be increased. Mr. W. Beehre, of Whangarei, has taken over the Purua, Ruataifgata West, and Kamo run from Mr. Abraham, of Aponga. Mr. Beehre has in past years given much satisfaction in this capacity; therefore the suppliers will be pleased to welcome his return.
