"QUITE IN ORDER."
WESTPORT HARBOUR BOARD APPOINTMENT.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, Aug. 13
The Westport Harbour Board Appointment Committee resumed this morning. The Hon. F. M. B. Fisher (Minister for Marine) examined, said his statement in the House that if he found Simpson's alleged convictions were correct he would take steps to have him removed had now been modified. Since he heard the circumstances he now considered Simpson's appointment quite in order. At the time of the appointment he knew nothing of the convictions. Mr. H. Atmore (M.P. for Nelson), in giving evidence, said he had brought the matter up owing to the blatant manner in which the Reform party had told the country that they never made any improper appointments. He now accepted Mr. Fisher's statement that he did not know of any convictions when the appointment was made; but he ought to have known. The Committee is now deliberating.
