DESCRIBED AT MEDICAL CONGRESS.
LONDON, Aug. 9. At the Medical Congress to-day, Dr. Beale, of Texas, described the disease named from which 3000 Americans died in 1912. and 50,000 are now suffering, mostly women who are tied to housework. The disease, he said, was of purelyacademic interest until six years ago, though it was previously known in Italy. Investigations showed that it was fairly widespread in Scotland; and that isolated cases had occurred in the south of England. The disease first produces itching on the hands, and usually spreads some time later to the digestive organs. The patient is attacked finally by melancholia, leading to insanity. The disease is generally attributed to fungi upon corn and maize.
