GREAT EARTHQUAKE RECORDED.

AJBOUT 2,500 MILES FROM S%DNEY.

SYDNEY, June 28,

The Government Observatory reports the occurrence of an extremely large earthquake. The records commenced! at 12.59 p.m. The principal surface waves occurred at 1.6 p.m., and thess were of enormous amplitude, reaching their greatest intensity very rapidly. The amplitude of the largest was 23% millimeters—considerably in excess of any other tremor ever recorded here. Tremors continued until 3.7 p.m. and were of saw-tooth pattern. 'The origin was about 2,500 miles from Sydney—probably •in the same neighbourhood as the earthquake recorded on May 80.
