Batty, who is in oc\ cupancy of the property popularly] known as the "Garden of Eden," in Whau Whau Valley, the "Advocate" has received samples of strawberries which are wonderful in size and of most delectable flavor. The hearing of charges Huston was concluded at the Auckland Supreme Court yesterday.. He pleaded guilty to burglary of car- j penter's tools in the north and clothing and money from McMahon's Hotel, and also to the two charges of breaking gaol. He was sentenced to fcix 'months' 'imprisonment on each of the charges of breaking gaol and to four years' imprisonment on each charge of burglary, the sentences to be concurrent. In addition he was declared an habitual criminal. He pleaded " not guilty" to the charge of burglary at Hikurangi, but after a retirement of three hours the jury brought in a verdict of guilty, and he was sentenced to four years' imprisonment. There was a good attendance at the Lyceum Cinema last night, when a new programme was screened. The " star " drama was entitled " The Path of Atonement," and was a fine exposition of the trials of humanity in the Bohemian life. " The Old Actor," " The Banker's Daughter," and the Indian drama were also excellent. The scenic section was well represented in " A Trip Through Berlin," and " The Cascades of Lini," and the comic films —" One-handed for a Wager," " Bumptious Takes up Automobiling," and " Juvenile Jiu-Jitsu " — caused roars of laughter. The Australian Gazette was, as usual, full of interesting topical events. Additional pictures to be shown this evening are the dramas " King Lear " (a coloured spectacular film) and " The Poacher." Chambers of Commerce are apparently liable to at least one of the ills to which football, cricket, hockey, and other clubs are heir—dilatoriness in paying subscriptions. The secretary reported at last night's meeting of the Chamber of Commerce that the outstanding subscriptions amounted to over £50, and exceeded the amount actually collected during the year in subscirptions. The secretary stated that the .arrears were not all for the current year. One account ran back four years and a half, during which time he could not remember seeing the member in question at a meeting. Mr. Crane said that even though citizens could not support the Chamber with the'r presence they should support it with their subscriptions. The secretary said he always canvassed those in arrear; but Mr. Crane said the secretary should not be called on to do so— members should pay their subscriptions without being reminded.
