ARBITRATION ACT PROVISIONS.
POWER GIVEN TO MINORITIES
WELLINGTON, June 7
The executive of the Federation ot I Labor interviewed Hon. G. Laurenson yesterday and made a protest against the present law in regard to the Arbitration Act. Mr P. Webb, president, said that they had understood that it was never intended that the Act should be compulsory, but that unfortunately, owing to the last decision of the Crown Law Office in regard to-Waihi, it was quite epparent that <L-e Act was compulsory. They found in many places minorities forming themselves into small unions, applying for registration, and forcing the majority „to become parties to awards. They asked for ah amendment of the Act to prevent this. Mr Semple expressed similar views. The Minister, replying, said that the Crown Law Office had advised that there was no justification for refusing 'to register the new union, and no legal power to do so. It appeared to him that the deputation had made put a very strong case. He would bring it under the notice of Cabinet with a view tc supplying some remedy when Parliament met. Hon. J. Colvin informed a deputatiqn from the Federation of Labor tha.t a bill now in , course of preparation ir connection with the recommendations of the Mines Commission.
