In response to invitations sent out by postcards a number of prominent merchants and traders of Gal way attended at one of the hotels of that city "to arrange matters in connection with the settlement of the local strike." As time passed, and no one appeared to know anything about the meeting beyond the reception of the postcards, it dawned upon those present that the only reason why they had assembled was that the day was the first of April. A tragedy of an unusually horrible character occurred recently at the village of Moldau, in Russian Poland, a man named Thimm, described as a landowner, binding his wife hand and foot and then hacking off her head with an axe. Evidently he committed the crime during an attack of insanity, as he was found next morning i wandering aimlessly about the fields in a state of nudity. Conjugal quarrels over a legacy are said to have unhinged his mind. J Christian Scientists, now very numerous throughout America, are im« mensely indignant because Mr Vemon Cole, one of their professional "healers," was convicted, of practising without a license, and fined £ 20. tike the American 'Osteopaths," who have recently, in New York State, secured the privilege of signing death certificates, they complain that they are the victims of prejudice and ignorance, and that practitioners of rival schools of healing, meaning the Allopaths and Homoepaths, are allied to prosecute them.
