ENVELOPED IN FLAMES.
MAN BURNED TO DEATH.
TRAGJC FIRE AT PAEROA.
THAMES, Feb. 19
A disastrous fire, attended with fatal i esults, occurred at Paeroa. A large private hotel, the "Royal Mail," owned and occupied by George Crosby, a well known resident, was completely destroyed.'
A few minutes after the alarm was given the building (an old one) was completely enveloped in flames. There was no chance of saving it, and i< was burnt to the ground.
Several boarders had narrow escapes in their night attire. The fire is b(-lievod to h.ivo commenced in a room occupied by a jcung man named Scotty Preston, an engineer, aged 24.
Some boarders endeavored to reach his room, but were driven back by smoke and lUunes. Preston was burned to death.
The insurance an the building was GSOO and on the furniture and effects C6fiO. Crosby is a heavy loser.
A woman named Mrs Flett escaped by a rope fro:n an upstairs window.
