BIG JACKPOTS.
TWO MINING MEN WINNERS JN GAME LASTING 72 HOURS.
A gambling story, in which big jackpots were won on the high seas during a game of 72 hours, was brought U) New York recently by travellers on the White Star liner Cedric, the vessel en which the h\y game was played, it is the first time in many years where a, game involvirg large am<itints has teen played without the assistance of professional gamblers. The game started on a Tuesday, and, with a few interruptions for sleep and meals, was in session continually until the liner came abeam the Ambrose Channel Lightship.
The game started with five men at the table and £nded with seven. Ten dollars (£2 is Sd) was the limit at the start, but the amount was gradually lifted until it reached £5. Frequently there was as much is .£C>O in the pot before the draw.
On the Thursday, when exceptionally good hands were dealt to all players the pot was £140 after the draw. Everyone drew cards, and all stood for a few raises. One of the players ; who had been dealt four queens and had drawn one card for a bluff, found himself betting for the pot against a man who had stood pat, the others having dropped. The two men raised each other several times, until the man with the four queens announced that he would raise all night on his hand. His opponent said nothing, but continued to raise, whereupon the man with the four queens called. The man who stood pat laid down four aces and took a pot that was close on £180.
The winners, who were two mining men from the West, declared they had won enough, and thereafter made no effort to win. Both declared they would like to see the losers win back some of their lost money.
