Lew Shank's Market.
MAYOR WHO HAS SOLVED THE COST OF HIGH LIVING.
Indianapolis is solving the problem of the high cost of living by enjoying the experience of the Mayor, who who has constituted himself a municipal salesman. He deals directly with farmers and market gardeners, conducts a daily sale of farm and dairy produce, and sells directly to jthe Indianapolis citizens without profit. He has knocked 40 per cent, off the price of almost everything he handles, and as a result has the ultimate consumer at his feet. His name is Lew Shank, and he has been christened " Unlimited Lew." Fhere is only one popular song in the city ; its chorus is : — 1 hen shout on ;« more our praise and thank, Revere, adore our own Lew Shank. \ Recently he bought a ton of Eng lish walnuts direct from the importer, and made the retailers furious by advertiseing them for sale at a price 30 per cent, less than that quoted by the fruiters. They sold like hot cakes. He has " busted" the " corners" in potatoes, pears, pork, milk-fed chickens, and butter ; and small wonder that Indianapolis calls him " Lew." 1 His products disappear like snow before the rising sun •■ Mr Shank is a remarkable person* L ality. He wears a slouch hat, and , has a broad smile and a witty word for everybody. Some of his best customers drive to his market in ' limousines, and send in thier foot 5 men for their purchases. He welcomes rich or poor, for he has enough c for all. > The Mayor's example is to be fol I lowed by the creation of an organisa , * ! tion called the Consumers' Company ; It will handle goods for daily 1 consumption direct from the produc- : ers ; and sell on the basis of a 10 per ; cent, profit. " That" says Mayor i Shank, " is all the monument I want. ■ The middleman has grown far too extortionate. Let us have a square deal, a full dinner pail, and reasonI able profits for the common people."
