A SIGNIFICANT HONOR.

CONFERRED ON SIR E. GREY

WHY MA': BECOME PREMIER

(Received Feb. 1-1, 8.34 a.m.)

LONDON, Feb. 13. The King has created Sir Edward Crey a Knight of the Garter.

The "Daily Graphic" suggests that this almost unprecedented honor conferred on a Commoner, preludes Mr Asquith's resignation and Sir E. Grey's elevation to the Premiership. This would be distasteful to the Radicals and Laborites, but the best Liberals would welcome it. The Garter honor indicates that Sir E. Grey commands the Sovereign's confidence.

It is significant that Mr Vaughan Nash, Mr Asquith's private secretary, les been appointed vice-chairman of the Developments Commission.

The "Graphic" adds that Viscount Haldane's visit was intended to assure that Sir E Grey's Premiership would not diminish the desire of the Cabinet to arrive at a friendly understanding - with Germany.
