"We hope that, whatever Ministry is formed, it will seriously set itself to the task of putting the liquor traffic on a footing more in accordance with the demands of public opinion. The open bar must be abolished as a first step; the consumption of spirits must be discouraged, and every inducement should be given to the licensed victuallers to conduct their houses as genuine places of recreation and refreshment, and not as mere drinking shops.—Christchurch Press.
