Mr J. Gordon Coates, of Kaipara, who unhorsed Mr John Stallworthy in the second political tilting bout 77 as born >at Matakohe, and after being educated at the local State school entered into pastoral work, on his father's farm, which he now controls. He and his brother- originated the Auckland Farmers' Union, Limited, and take an active interest in its management. He is captain of the Otamatea Mounted Rifles, and president of the North Kaipara Agricultural Association, and has filled the position of chairman of school committees. He ii also a member of Otamatea County Council, chairman of North Kaipara Co-operative Stores, and a prominent member of the Otamatea Racing Club. With county matters he is closely identified, and has on more than one occasion proceeded to Wellington in order to lay the needs of his district before the Ministers. He is a noted breeder of Shropshire sheep and Hereford cattle, and is a leading Kaipara pastoralist.
