DROWNING FATALITY.

AT KIRIPAKA.

A sad drowning fatality occurred at Kiripaka yesterday afternoon. A boy named Sydney Nelson, 11 years of age, was returning from Sunday School at about four o'clock with his seven-year-old brother. The elder lad was trailing a rope behind him, and as the brothers were crossing the bridge which spans the Ngunguru river, a tidal inlet, the rope caught in the decking. The sudden jerk caused the unfortunate boy to lose his balance, and to fall into the river. His brother, who was too young to know what to do, and who could have procured assistance near at hand, ran to his home, a quarter of a mile away, and when help arrived Sydney was found drowned. His body had drifted some 10 feet away from where he had fallen in.

The district coroner, Mr J. M. Killen, and Constable Condon proceeded to Kiripaka this morning, where an inquest was held.
