MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
McDonald remanded,
Messrs E. A. Hutchings and J. McKinnon, Justices of the Peace, occupied the Bench at the Magistrate's Court this morning.
Kenneth McDonald was granted a further remand for 8 days, owing to his being unable to attend to answer a charge of drunkenness.
Robert Adair (Mr Edmunds) pleaded guilty to being drunk for the second time within six months. Mr Edmunds said that defendant, who was a tailor, had of late been working long hours and doubtless the drink had the better of him. Counsel pleaded for a light fine. Defendant was mulcted of 10s, in default 48 hours. The police applied for a prohibition oi'der to be issued against defendant. Mr Edmunds opposed. Constable Paine said that he had known defendant for nine months, and every evening he was to be found more or less the worse for liquor. Plenty of chances had been given him, but he took no heed.
Constable Condon had known accused eighteen months, and though he was a hard worker, he drank heavily, and in his opinion was a fit subject for a prohibition order.
Mr Edmunds pleaded for another chance, and gave the defendant's assurance that the latter would give up the drink. The application was adjourned for six w,eeks, defendant's behavior in the interim to be noted; by the police.
