NEWCASTLE OF THE NORTH.
COAL AREA PROVED. NEAR WARO ROCKS. (Special Correspondent.) ' . AUCKLAND, Oct. 19. Boring operations have been conducted for the past 18 months in the Hikurangi district by the Northern Coal Company, but very little was made known publicly as to the value of the diamond drill tests. The company desired to assure itself that the indications were as reliable as they seemed, and it is now certain beyond all question, that a seam of coal of first-class quality is available, that it has a width ranging from 7ft 6in to 11 ft 3in, and that it extends over a considerable area between the limestone rqcks at Waro and the Hikurangi Swamp. The nearest portion of this area is within seven chains of the Government railway, and can be easily opened up, the coal at that point being at a depth of only 105 ft. This field is not only a very valuable find to the company, but should also prove of great benefit and importance to the Whangarei district generally, which bids fair to become the Newcastle of the North.
