The wearing of hatpins in trams by ladies and girls was mentioned at a meeting of the Mornington Borough Council, Dunedin, recently. "I wish to bring up a matter which I am surprised has not been brought up in public before," said Councillor Le Cren, "and perhaps you will laugh at it; but it is no laughing matter." In parts of Europe, he said, there was a by-law prohibiting the wearing of hatpins, and in other parts the points of the pins had to be protected. The sudden stopping of a tram and the collision with a lady's hat might cause the loss of an eye, and he had heard of a girl now in the hospital who had lost the sight of one of her eyes. He did not know whether the matter was one for the Council or for the Municipal Conference. The Mayor and Councillors agreed as to the danger arising from the wearing of hatpins, but no definite action was taken.
