ANCHORS DID SOT DROP.
When the Rakaia arrived at Port Chalmers from London on Thursday afternoon the anchors would not drop when the "letting-go" mechanism released them. Instead of the usual big splash followed by the rattle of the cable through the hawse pipes the anchors (says the Dunedin "Star", stayed where they were. No reason
for this extraordinary occurrence could be discovered. Meanwhile the
ship was manoeuvring against a strong ebb tide to retain her position, and onlookers wondered why she did not drop her anchor. The cause of it was all discovered down below. On the voyage, the sailors in order to preserve their slumbers undisturbed while the ship swayed to the roll of the Southern Ocean, had gone into the chain locker and lashed the anchor cables together to prevent their "clank, clank," that irritated the silent watches of the night. When the lashing used to "frap" the cables togethed was cut the anchors, dropped and the unusual incident closed.
