CANADIAN COASTAL TRAGEDY,
VIEWED BY PEOPLE ASHORE.
EIGHTEEN LIVES LOST,
(Received April 12, 9 a.m.) OTTAWA, April 11. The steamer Iroquois, engaged in tlie coastal trade, from Victoria, British Columbia, foundered at the mouth ot the port in view of hundreds of people. A launch started to the rescue, but her machinery failed, and she was unable to reach the drowning people. Many who were afloat among the upper works of the steamer dropped off one by one. Several of them floated ashore on wreckage. The captain, several passengers, and five of the crew escaped in a damaged lifeboat. The disaster was due to the shifting of the cargo. A number of women penned in the deck-house added to the confusion by their screams. They sank with the vessel. The exact death roll is not known, but does not exceed 18.
