Smart was sentenced to death tooay on the charge of murdering Ethel Karris.

He protested his innocence.

The judge declared that there could be no doubt of Smart's guilt. The crime had been conceived with deadly deliberation and executed with unflinching brutality. For such a crime there was no hope of mercy in this world.
