N.S. WALES ASSEMBLY.
PROTRACTED SITTING
A PALTRY THREE HUNDRED."
(Received Dec. 17, 5.37 a.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 16. A sitting of the Assembly commenced yesterday evening and still continues. The Government, determined to push business along, declined to adjourn. The Opposition thereupon started stonewalling, and the atmosphere was electric during the day, with several rmall scenes. The Hansard staff was worn out, and reduced to taking notes instead of a verbatim report. The Electoral Amending Bill passed, an attempt to avoid postal voting failing. The only important alteration was that Saturday was abandoned as polling day, the new provision being that any day ?an be fixed for elections, but it must be a half-holiday. The Estimates were then taken, with frequent applications of the closure. Fair progress was made. Several members spoke in favor of increasing members' salaries. Mr McGowen said 't surprised him how the country members managed to subs'st on a paltrj £300. He suggested the introduction of a bill to increase salaries by £100 or £200. or submit it to a referendum He favored a referendum, and would submit the question to Cabinet.
