INFAMOUS PROPOSALS.
A RHAPSODY OF NONSENSE,
During the Financial debate the Oppositionists attacked the Federal Government's referenda proposals.
Mr Waddell, ex-Treasurer, described the proposals as infamous ; and said that the people voting for them would live to regret it. The Federal Government had bunched four proposals together, compelling the people to vote "yes" or "no" for the lot, because they knew that one or more were rotten, and would not stand on their merits
Mr Wade spoke for two hours, chiefly upholding State rights.
The Minister for Works described Mr Wade's statement as a rhapsody of nonsense, but no expression of opinion on the referenda. Mr Me Cowan, however, had telegraphed Mr Hughes asking for information on the matter, as the Government was pressed on all sides for a pronouncement.
