HUANUI VALLEY ROAD.

MEETING OF RESIDENTS

On Thursday evening, September 15th, a large and representative b: dy of residents and ratepayers of Hu-inui and the surrounding districts mot. at the Huanui school to consider the l>,st means whereby a road from the Kirij paka Road to the Whareora Road, \ through the Huanui Valley, might be obtained. Mr Billington was voted to the chair, and in addressing the explained the nature of the master they were now called upon to consider. He called attention to the urgent necessity of a road being opened, on account of the thoroughfare, which had previously been through private property, being closed against traffic. He then asked any gentleman who had any proposition for the removal of the difficulty, to preset it for consideration. After several propositions had been considered, Mr Clarke moved, and Mr Jones-seconded: —'"That a petition to the Minister for Public Works praying for a grant of £150 to enable ihe carrying out of the work be presented to the County Council, at its next mooting, September 28th, to be forwarded on to the Minister. —-This was carried. A deputation consisting of Messrs Clarke, Blumhardt, and Wrack was

then chosen to wait upon the Council and explain the matter to which the petition refers. (It might be pointed out that the County Council was last year petitioned to have this road (already surveyed) formed, but no satisfaction was given). During the course of the meeting it was shown that, by the closing of the old thoroughfare, more than half tho children attending the school would be debarred from so doing unless the road were opened. This is not the only manner in which the settlors would be caused very serious incon ■ venience, for, without the formation ot the new road, one gentleman would be absolutely without access to his property, excepting by trespass. Henc/> the immediate necessity of its being opened. It will be seen from the above, that the residents of the district are not asking for the carrying out of the work before it is necessary.
