Mr Beaton and Mr Bent have botl received messages of sympathy for the sufferers in the Gippeland fires fron Mr Beddon. The fires are now 1 abating, though a fierce one is raging in the bad country around Foster. If a hot wind springs up this fire yfill devastate some hitherto untouched country. Mr John McLean, of the Cove, aged about 82, died yesterday after an illness of a few days. Deceased was a brother of Mr J. Neil McLean, of Whangarei, and father of Mr Dan.
