ASSAULT ON A WARDER.

On Sunday afternoon a determined assault was made on a warder at Lyttelton Gaol by Joseph Foggan (who was concerned in a recent assault on a warder) and Herbert Allandale, serving a sentence of eleven years for forgery and attempting to escape from gaol at Wellington. Shortly after two o'clock Allandalc asked Warder Manning to accompany him to the library on the pretence that something wanted attending to. On arriving there he was at once seized by Foggan and Allandalc, and partly, throttled. They then took bis keys. Warder Parker, who was on patrol, came up, and the prisoners tried to force him into the room, but failing, shut the door, which has a. spring lock; fastening Manning in, aivd rushed into the corridor. There Foggan drew his knife, and told Parker to show him the north wing, whore Warder Lodge was on duty, saying he would kill Lodge. Parker blew his whistle, grappled with the men, and assistance arriving, they were soon secured. Foggan is supposed to have rnadc a knife 'in the workshop. It Lad «• sharp point and edge, and was fitted into a handle like a bradawle.
